Cogwheel is a small charity providing invaluable counselling in the capacity of preventative mental health support to the people of Cambridgeshire. The budget cuts amongst local authorities have meant that the demand for our service remains high.
Cogwheel is grateful to all those organisations and individuals that support our work financially. Thanks to your generosity we have been able to sustain our services over the last 32 years.
We’re working to make sure nobody has to face a mental health problem alone. People need our support more than ever, and demand for our services is growing.
You can support our work making a one off or regular donation with Virgin Money Giving, or creating your own fundraising page with Facebook (e.g. some of our supporters have created a ‘birthday fundraiser’, etc.).

- This year for my/our ‘birthday/wedding anniversary’ we are asking for donations to THE COGWHEEL TRUST CIO, an amazing charity that provides counselling and psychotherapy services in Cambridgeshire, including a substantial proportion of subsidised places for individuals and families on low income or living on benefits. Here in the UK 1 in 4 people will suffer from mental health problems in the course of a year, the most common disorder being mixed anxiety and depression. Early counselling intervention is an effective solution and prevents more complex health and social needs from developing. Through counselling a person can talk about difficult thoughts, feelings, behaviour and situations. Counselling can enable positive changes to take place leading to a healthier, happier and more hopeful outlook. This is why I’m/we’re asking for donations to Cogwheel and I/we hope that you’ll consider contributing as a way of celebrating with me/us. Every little bit will help me/us reach my/our goal.Thank you!

How do people find us?
We have no need to advertise our service and many of our clients come to us through word of mouth. 30% of people came on the recommendation of their GP, yet we receive no funding from the NHS. In addition, a total of 19 different mental health support services recommended Cogwheel to people. These ranged from the 111 Helpline to specialist services like Petals and Choices. 21% percent of people came on the recommendation of these services.
Through 2018 we were contacted by over 600 people and provided 4691 assessments and sessions for adults, 41 for children and 20 for families. These numbers for adults and children are very similar to the previous year. The work we do with children is also increasing and we have have been working on the referral process to reduce waiting times and to make sure that the service is appropriate to the level of need.
Looking forward to 2020/21, we anticipate an increase in demand for counselling as budget restraints in the NHS limit the mental wellbeing services that it can provide.
What are our challenges?
Our waiting lists are currently longer than we would like and our children’s work is heavily over-subscribed. More support will enable us to employ more counsellors so that we can reduce the time people must wait before they are seen, and expand our valued children’s service.
To be able to do this Cogwheel need funds to subsidise the cost of our services.
We have a broad range of income streams so we’re not reliant on one source of funding. This is very important to us as it means we can remain entirely independent. Cogwheel continues to operate as a charity, with about 53% of our funding requirement being provided by donations from our clients. The challenge to Cogwheel is to raise the balance, 27% each year.
We’re very grateful to everyone who supports us financially.
Each year a number of grant making trusts support our work and we also provide some counselling services on behalf of the local education authority and city and county councils.
We are very grateful to everybody who supports Cogwheel by volunteering as counsellors, trustees, fundraisers, user group members, or by providing admin and IT support. We are able to continue playing a vital role in providing advice, support and a listening ear when people need it most because of the amazing support of people like you.
ü Volunteering can be a really rewarding and useful experience. You can get involved by joining in one of our upcoming fundraising events (setting up, marshalling, etc.), holding an event of your own, creating your own online fundraiser, making a donation, or becoming a Cogwheel Ambassador.
